You shouldn’t, it’s dumb.
Just kidding! I mean, it IS totally unnecessary in today’s creative and photo industry… BUT it’s also a wonderfully rich medium that encourages mindfulness, intentionality, patience, and technical growth. It opens up so many new techniques to explore, and really taking the time to dive into the practice & craft of the art form will make you a better photographer in general.

Three words: Chemistry, Time, & Experience.
Yes, you can find labs who charge less, for sure. But they will either be using cheaper processes (chemistry) which leads to inconsistent results, spend less time and attention to your film, or have less experienced people doing the work. But at the end of the day, it’s not what I would choose for my film projects.
One great way to make it cheaper is for YOU to come learn to do it yourself! That’s a great way to make it more affordable and gain your own experience through time and attention to your film.

Honestly, it’s not an efficient use of my time or chemistry. If I allowed this as a business model, I’d need to raise prices significantly, and I’d rather REDUCE barriers to analog photography if I’m able to.

Hi. I’m Roo. I run this cutie patootie of a back alley film lab & darkroom. I have over 20 years of commercial and advertising photography experience with major brands and agencies nationally. You can see my work here if you really want.

That’s the plan. There will be a suggested donation that goes to help pay overhead and fund various missions like the Artist-In-Residence program or the Gender Pay Gap and BIPOC/LGBTQ+ discounts.

It’s a heavily subsidized (by me and donations) 3-month long studio and lab/darkroom share opportunity for photographers and visual artists. It basically gives people the run of the place, including my processing, scanning, and darkroom equipment, and (if they need or want it) access to me as a creative and educational resource.

I do, though I can’t promise we’ll always find a balance of what we both need. Never hurts to ask though! Holler at ya boi.

Of course! Everyone is entitled to their own adorably stupid, incorrect, or otherwise wrongheaded opinions, you dummy!
Just kidding. Film IS dumb. And I love it so much, for so many reasons!
